Monday marked a significant milestone in the realm of Extended Reality (XR) development as The Khronos Group unveiled the highly anticipated OpenXR 1.1 specification. This release signifies an important leap forward by consolidating multiple OpenXR extensions into the core specification. Besides feature enhancements and specification refinements, one of the key highlights of OpenXR 1.1 is the integration of several extensions into the core specification. This integration not only fosters wider adoption but also provides developers and vendors with a unified foundation, ensuring consistent and seamless cross-platform user experiences. Notable extensions promoted to the core specification include XR_EXT_local_floor, XR_VARJO_quad_views, XR_EXT_palm_pose, XR_EXT_uuid, and XR_KHR_locate_spaces. Collabora has been the proud Khronos OpenXR CTS Contractor since it won the OpenXR CTS Improvement project in 2022. Honoring that commitment, we have played a pivotal role since by shaping the OpenXR 1.1 release and its corresponding OpenXR 1.1 Conformance Test Suite (CTS). As of today, a development version has been published in the OpenXR GitHub, and an approved release for conformance submissions will be available very shortly.
Monado, the cross-platform open source XR runtime, has recently received significant updates to align with the features and specifications of OpenXR 1.1, ensuring compatibility and optimal performance for developers and users alike. These latest additions to Monado can be found in this MR. By staying on par with OpenXR 1.1, Monado continues to be a robust and versatile platform for creating immersive free and open source XR experiences across a wide range of hardware devices and software environments.
